The biggest thing I've learned isn't simply that I trained too hard all those years.
Everyone says, "Alberto trained way too hard and burned out." To be a world-class runner, you have to train hard. But what I did learn is you can't do those hard workouts unceasingly. In order to be good, you have to train at a high level, but you must allow your body time to recover. You need to take time off. You need to run easy on some days, and you need to take at least a month off at the end of the season. I never did either.
I look back on the last 10 years and all the frustrations, and, in a way, I'm glad that it
happened the way it did. If I had been running great all this time, I don't know what I would be like or what my priorities would be now. I might be divorced, and my kids might hate me. I' m thankful that God tested me in a way that has allowed me to understand what the priorities in life should be. More than anything, I learned there's a lot more to life than just seeing how fast you can run.
Alberto Slazar, an American marathon runner
*I never did either
*what my priorities would be now
*I might be divorced
*More than anything
*I learned there's a lot more to life than just seeing how fast you can run
